FITNESS CHALLENGE NETS NEARLY $2,000 IN CONTRIBUTIONS FOR North Wilkes Middle School

North Wilkes Middle School hosted a community health fair and fitness challenge on November 8, 2007, for the purpose of promoting health programs to the school and community.  Vendors from throughout Wilkes County were stationed in the gymnasium for the evening event that attracted students, parents, and teachers.

Principal Wayne Shepherd and several staff members represented the school in the continuous run for over an hour which helped to raise nearly $2,000 for health supplies, materials, and equipment for the school.

Featured in the fitness event were members of the "Cardio Fitness Team" consisting of Joe Sinclair, Brea Fincannon, Lisa Warren, Garry Wasson, Laura Saunders, Garry Saunders, George Campbell, and Nick Plyler.

The Statesville team successfully completed the one hour fitness challenge, with Lisa Warren rowing the entire hour on a Concept2 Rowing Machine.  The fitness challenge was the third event which was created by Joe Sinclair for the purpose of raining needy funds for school health programs.  Previous events were held at West Wilkes Middle School and Glade Creek Elementary School in Alleghany County.

Over $7,000 has been raised for student health needs in the three schools.  A limited amount of grant money is available for the challenge along with pledges from the business community.  Future events are planned to promote health awareness.
