Beyond Collage - Create, Recycle and Combine Media

Vae has worked with Katherine Chang Liu, Wolf Kahn, Carrie Brown, Ernesto Velardi, Carol Barnes and Fran Larsen and has attended the prestigious Springmaid Mills Watermedia workshops for 15 years. She is featured in Gerald Brommer’s book, “Collage Techniques” as well as creating the cover art for “Branches, Volume 10”, receiving the 2001 “Editors Choice Award”. Her paintings have appeared on the cover of “Art of Wellbeing” Magazine, fall 2002. She placed and was published in the National Ohio Grand Exhibition 2000. Hamilton is a member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society and the Society of Layerists in Multimedia.

Explore new dimensions and freedom in your art work.

This workshop will introduce you to new and experimental ways of using paint and collage with water-based acrylics.  Come explore the use of various design formats and how they can aid us in creating paintings with good composition.   We will work from transparent to opaque with color and value,  and explore the use of watercolor and acrylic application, gel mediums and gesso.  We will also employ transfers, texture techniques, computer generated images, stamping, “found” materials, and make “road rust”. The techniques used are child and adult friendly. 

The day will include several demos and time for you to work. Vae has been teaching workshops in the Southeast for 15+ years and 13 years at ASU.  Her current work may be seen at Carlton Gallery in Banner Elk and Seven Sister’s in Black Mountain.  Hamilton’s website is: www.vaehamilton.com.

Constructing Number Sense

North Carolina Teacher Evaluation Process Training

Alphabetica: Thinking Creatively

In this make-it-take-it workshop you will begin a personal word wall book, using words that are significant to you, new words you’ve learned in your personal or professional growth, etc.  Creating your own personal “word wall,” will give you unique ideas for ongoing projects for students.

Begin now to brainstorm your word lists for each letter of the alphabet – keeping a word journal.   Connections will be made to the new Rubric for Evaluating NC Teachers and the NC Professional Teaching Standards.  Presenters, Dee and Sheree, will get participants started; then you will spend the day working on your own personal book.  
Basic materials will be provided.  However, participants should bring the following:
         Collect and bring cut out letters, words, and/or phrases, pictures of things that make your heart sing!  Also bring old magazines, etc. to share (those you don’t mind being cut up).
  You might even cut out parts of pizza boxes J  Think collage!  Register early as space in this class is limited to 15 participants.

Visual, spatial and kinesthetic activities will tap into the creative side of learning for you and your students.  Fun art-based projects to promote higher order thinking and increase vocabulary skills can be easily adapted to fit any content area.  Presenters will demonstrate a variety of hands-on projects to inspire you and get your creative wheels turning.  Bring EOG/EOC sample questions, textbooks, vocabulary word lists and copies of your NCSCS Goals and Objectives to design unique projects for your students. 

Basic materials will be provided for you to use, but feel free to bring any colored papers, stencils, pens, glitter, ribbon and any other classroom/art supplies that have been gathering dust since you bought them.   (Limited to the first 18 participants).

Are you tired of doing the same old thing in your classes?  Are you ready to spice things up and try something new?  How would you like having GPS devices brought to your classroom when you requested them? 

Join us for a day of training, courtesy of The Science house of NC State University. We will use GPS devices to explore new and exciting ways to teach science concepts.  You will have the opportunity to investigate many types of caches, how to incorporate the technology into your existing lessons, and also have time to create new lessons.  (No previous experience with GPS units required).

This workshop is appropriate for grades teachers, grades 6-12 (especially wonderful for integrated lessons).  Physics, Chemistry, Physical Science, Earth Science and Biology content will be addressed and aligned to the NCSCOS.

Problem-based Learning Using the News: The Logical Place to Start

Description:

Join fellow educators in a timely workshop that focuses on communication skills, effective reading comprehension strategies and technology to explore real-world problems.  This interdisciplinary approach uses print and online newspapers to help students identify problems.  Model the use of graphic organizers for navigating the news and analyzing the problems.  Encourage research by identifying experts and stakeholders and staging interviews.  Hands-on activities align with the NC SCOS, encourage collaboration, promote 21st century learning and help younger students prepare for the graduation project.

Participants will receive Newspapers in Education curricula and will integrate approaches, receive templates and classroom sets of materials developed for Project Citizen, a federally-funded project offered through the Center for Civic Education.  Teachers will take away practical approaches to problem-based learning that advance basic reading and writing skills as well as conceptual thinking.

Though not required, if possible, please bring a laptop computer to this hands-on training to search newspapers’ websites and electronic editions and extend learning about real-world problems.   (Make sure your laptop is ready to be connected to a wireless connection.  Please test it to make sure the wireless key is on and that it is set to connect directly to a wireless network).

Physical Education Across the Curriculum

Veteran PE teacher, Randy Bernhardt, is proud to be on the staff at Balls Creek Elementary, a Physical Education Demonstration School from 1986-2004.

Attend this training and learn new games/activities to promote reading, spelling, motor skill and physical development.   This workshop will focus on K-6 physical education activities designed to get students interested and engaged; while integrating instruction.  These activities will include integration with various subjects using alphalids and other equipment.

Seventh Grade Social Studies as a Vehicle for Reading and Writing

Description:

In this workshop, participants will explore the use of social studies as a medium for developing writing skills with seventh grade students.  Participants will learn a variety of CRISS strategies to strengthen student thinking and organization for writing, and develop SMART Board strategies for further enhancing student writing skills for the seventh grade writing competencies. 

Participants with laptops loaded with SMART Board software are encouraged to bring their laptops with them to the workshop; however laptops aren’t required to attend.  (Make sure your laptop is ready to be connected directly to a wireless network.   Please test it to make sure the wireless key is on).

Participants should bring with them a grant for which they would like to apply.  This workshop will include practice in writing needs statements, goals and objectives, and more in-depth work in the components of grant proposals.   (Limited to 30 participants).
